The State Police Crime Lab had been processing the scene all morning. The lead detective was a mountain of a man named Joe Roy. Weaver had worked with him before and had taken classes on processing crime scenes taught by Roy at the academy.

Roy smiled when he saw Weaver. “Well, hello, Mike. What brings you here? I thought you were with Portland PD?”

“Hi Joe. I still am. But we have reason to believe that this case might be related to the Peddie case from last month.”

“Really? How so?”

“Both of the victims are recent parolees, and both attend a counseling group to help acclimate to the outside world.”

“Now, that would be a hell of a coincidence if they’re not,” said Roy.

Weaver looked around at the mess. “Was the place trashed?”

Roy looked around and shrugged. “Just a slob, I think. The perp left a bunch of evidence and got out in a hurry. He vomited in a mask and tossed it on the floor. Then he stepped in it and left shoe prints. We also have some in grease near the body. He’s a big guy. I wear size 13 shoes, and the prints look pretty darn close to that.”

“Seriously? We found size 13 boot prints at the Peddie crime scene.”

“We’ll have this guy soon. He left a pocketknife on the floor and prints on the door casing and knob.”

“DNA?” asked Weaver.

“I would think so off from the knife and the mask for sure. Also, it may or may not be related, but there is a pile of shit out back and a pair of winter gloves he used to wipe his ass, so we can probably get DNA from the gloves too. They may be a match.”

“Any idea of a cause?”

“Well, his face was burned off, but no one heard anything, so it may have been post mortem. It seems to me that a guy having his face burned would do a lot of screaming.”

Weaver nodded. “I know I would. Thank you, Joe. Please let me know if you find anything else.”

Roy shook his hand. “Will do. We’ll catch him.”
